So I finally use my laptop and free internet! How precious is easy internet access in the comfort of home! Right now I'm in bed typing softly in the fear of waking my dorm-mates, one of whom is a shirtless beautiful blond three beds away from me :)
I just returned after yet another eventful day in Gotham City. I had to catch the 'Sundays in the City' film festival at the Tribeca theatre at 2pm. So I decided to hang out in Greenwich Village, which is two subway stops away from Tribeca. I also decide to cut down on my expenses since I went way over budget yesterday (but that was also because of the week's subway pass, and the hostel payment, etc.).
Breakfast consisted of a pepsi and a double chocolate donut at Dunkin's. Enjoyed the lovely sun and the cold breeze roaming around Greenwich. Everyone seemed to be enjoying a lazy Sunday afternoon. Lots of interesting eating places had special brunch menus, and I stopped at each one to read and satisfy my taste buds with the help of my imagination. There was one street full of smoke shops (cigars, bongs, and other accessories), tattoo & piercing places, and sex toy shops. I walked around the whole square twice - walking on different sides of the street, peeking into each store. The only other people walking at my pace were the dog-walkers. After much wandering, I decided to sit in a beautiful park full of sunlight, and took out reading material. I look up and around to absorb my environment, and I see a huge church right in front of me - standing tall and mighty in this relatively stunted part of NYC. Clock strikes quarter past noon and the church bells start ringing. I see people going into the church - a lot of families, old men and women, and others. Suddenly it strikes me - its the Sunday Mass! I get up and walk over to the church and enter. I thought I would be the alien, but I see a Chinese priest! It was quite an experience. I was there for an hour before I left to get lost on the way to Tribeca.
The films were good overall - some excellent, and some horrible too. The animation shorts by graduate students of the University of the Arts, Philadelphia were really really good. The feature film Staten Isand was great fun to watch, even though I know I didn't even get half the jokes because of being a non-New Yorker. This was a nightmare from hell! A rich parent's indulgence equals to horrible cinema.
After all this I decide to retire early and head back home. I have vegetable and pork dimsums at a chinese-spanish cuisine place next to my hostel. Interesting place. Next time I'm trying mexican food there.
Eleven minutes of battery left on the laptop. Power points are a luxury here. So I shall leave now. Tomorrow has nothing special planned - probably a UN tour and some bookstores. I need a rest day now. By the way, I haven't taken a single photograph till now, on purpose. More later. Adios!
